An Overview of Sound Therapy

The effect of sound on all living matter needs no translation in order to take place. It is widely understood that music and sound have the power to build on existing emotions, light people up with a sense of nostalgia, add an element of suspense or create comfort by displaying predictability. Sounds can have psychological links that we do not realize take place. For example, depending on the listener, the sound of waves crashing can trigger desires to go on vacation in the near future, or it can trigger a memory of a significant event that took place around a large body of water. Sound is often used to indicate praise or a reward of some sort, whether it is a crowd of cheers or a round-of-applause.
For thousands of years, Sound Therapy has been used to achieve word-and-thought-defying brain activity within people. As mentioned above, the same sound can yield different psychological responses, but Sound Therapy works with frequencies that positively affect us psychologically and on a cellular level. Sound Therapy heals with healing frequencies that are applied to to the physical body and subtle energy fields around the body. Healing frequencies and sounds are delivered using sound healing tools such as Tibetan singing bowls, quartz crystal bowls, Tuning forks, the digeridoo, Native flute, singing, etc.

The Science of Sound Therapy

Sound Therapy engages the neocortex of our brain, which is involved in conscious thought, language, sight and hearing. Different levels of complexity in sound can have different effects on functional brain connectivity. Sound in the form of music has been shown to improve IQ, ward off brain disfunction. Sound Therapy also prompts the release of dopamine, known as the happy chemical, in the brain.
On a cellular level, we are constantly being vibrated by sound frequencies that are heard and unheard, such as music and electromagnetic energy. The unit of frequency of vibration is measured in hertz (Hz) and the number of vibrations or cycles per second (cps). What Sound Therapy works with is resonance and entrainment with harmonics from musical tools. Resonance can be described as the effect of one pitch, or tone, on another. Entrainment can be described as the resonance of tempo and rhythm, or the effect of external tempos and rhythms on our internal rhythms.
